Easy Being Ethical: FatFace Is The High Street Brand Making A Stand For Sustainability

Shopping more sustainably can feel like a mountain to climb, but some of the best ethical clothing right now can be found on the high street - and it's all courtesy of FatFace.

Let’s be real – being sustainable when it comes to fashion isn’t easy for anybody. Vouching to have a slower approach when it comes to things like fashion is especially hard when the brands aren’t transparent about the steps they’re taking towards a more sustainable ethos.

It’s difficult for everybody, regardless of size when it comes to sustainability, but as a plus size woman I find it especially hard. It’s nigh on impossible to find clothes that fit and flatter at the best of times , and then when you’re looking for pieces that do that without damaging the planet and the world in which we live? It’s a catch-22 because I’m passionate about the planet – making changes and alterations to my life wherever I can in order to benefit it – but rarely can these changes be made to the clothing that I wear. Charity shops are dire when it comes to plus size garments, and fast fashion stores aren’t at all sustainable. It seems as though the best way to contribute to helping the planet is to donate old clothes to charity, buy second hand furniture and hunt out the best vintage jewellery.

But these issues aren’t confined to plus-size people like myself - sustainability is hard to access for so many people regardless of size, shape or gender – but it needn’t be. Especially when there is a pioneer of the fashion industry leading the way to sustainable style in an inclusive way that allows all women to take a step towards a slower lifestyle - and, most importantly, at an accessible pricepoint.

FatFace is changing the face of slow fashion right now. Once regarded as a casual surfer-style brand, FatFace has undergone an impressive transition into a bonafide fashion destination with affordable, versatile designs that are built to last. In fact, FatFace makes some of the most long-lasting garments by using sustainably sourced materials across nearly everything they make – really, what’s not to love?

Plenty of high street and luxury brands are known to bend the truth with their sustainability measures - it's called 'green washing' whereby customers are led to believe practices are more environmentally friendly than they truly are. With FatFace, you can rest assured that they're as transparent as it gets. How so? Well, with 100% of the cotton for their cotton products already now responsibly sourced, their clothing is versatile, durable and incredibly long-lasting too. By 2025 not only will their cotton be responsibly sourced, but so will their polyester and viscose. Not bad, right?

To give even more weight to their claims, FatFace are also active members of the Ethical Trading Initiative and pride themselves on working with suppliers who share their values and meet their high quality and ethical requirements. As a result, so far FatFace has reduced their carbon footprint by 8% over the past two years, switched its product bags to recycled plastic, switched bubble wrap in online orders to fully-recyclable 'hexwrap' as well as swapping its online delivery bags to recycled paper.

Sustainable steps towards a greener planet, and sizing that caters up to an XXL or UK 22 – FatFace is great for anybody who is opting for a slower approach to fashion.
